Chef Dewi Sutanto’s food is a treat for your taste buds and her presentation style adds a unique touch.

I was born and raised in Indonesia and learnt to cook Indonesian food from my mom, aunties, grandma and friends back home. I migrated to the Bay Area a long time ago and I look forward to sharing what I know of authentic Indonesian cuisine with people in the Bay Area.

My food originates from Indonesia, and I present you with Nasi Padang, which is a speciality of Padang, West Sumatra. The food is usually very spicy, but we have adapted it to suit the tastes of the local population, retaining mild spice level to enhance the flavors beautifully. In fact, I feel the preparation here is even better than what we get back home since we are able to get fresh, local ingredients and high quality meats. Nasi Padang is a home-style preparation, but it has become really popular for special occasions here in the Bay Area.

The journey of Sedap Indo was sown a few years ago with five friends. After numerous potluck dinners, we decided to rent a kitchen and spread the love of Indonesian cuisine in the Bay Area. A new journey began that day. Over the next two years, I decided to work hard and make Sedap Indo a reality. My dream to share the best Indonesian cuisine with the people in the Bay Area was finally beginning to take shape. For me, the highlight has been people wanting to eat my food from all parts of the country, and in a certain case, even relocating their wedding to the Bay Area so I could cater.

As a fellow Indonesian, I can definitely attest the authenticity of her cooking. True to her own words, her dishes were exactly like how my own mom would make them back home. I’m already looking forward to ordering my next meal from her!

Food is a medium of artistic expression for me. I like to plate my food to look beautiful, and the colors to reflect the variegated flavors of Indonesian cooking. It’s made with a slow cooking process with the Beef Rendang being cooked almost for ten hours over a slow flame. My food is truly my labor of love – and something I share with my husband and daughter here in the Bay Area. I’m lucky to work with a talented team in our commissary kitchen in Milpitas and I hope you enjoy the culinary journey to Indonesia.
